"I went to Miami as a model and got cast in a children's show that was shooting in Peru.
"It was the disaster of disasters."
She was 24 when she arrived in Hollywood.
Her first job was on the soap The Young and the Restless. Her first film role was as a biker chick in the Gary Busey action flick Bulletproof, which she followed with the direct-to-video Richard Grieco soapy drama Heaven or Vegas.
Those days of struggling in B-grade projects are just a memory. Potter is currently so much in demand that the producers of Along Came a Spider had to twist her arm to play the disgraced Secret Service agent who helps Freeman's detective track a demented kidnapper.
"The character is so unlike anything I've ever done that I figured there must be two Monica Potters in Hollywood and they had the wrong one."
It was the chance to work with Freeman that finally convinced Potter to accept the role. "It's an honour to work with Morgan. What you learn working with him is that he's just as phenomenal a person. He's kind, generous and funny."
Potter's two sons are now 10 and 6. "They're very excited about my being an actress.
"They love to travel with me but they're a little over Vancouver. I filmed Head Over Heels and Along Came a Spider back-to-back in Vancouver.
"They want me to find a movie that will shoot in Italy or somewhere equally exotic."
